BSR to monthly units

A model, not measured data — the range is the honest answer

Use the main category rank, not a sub-category rank.

How the estimate is produced

Sales fall off with rank on a power curve: the gap between rank 100 and rank 1,000 is enormous, the gap between 50,000 and 51,000 is nothing. The model here is units per day = a × rank−b, with a different pair of coefficients per category.

The honest caveat. Amazon does not publish rank-to-sales data. Every estimator, including the well-known paid ones, is fitting a curve to inferred observations. Ours shows a range because the range is the truthful output — the central figure is just its midpoint.

What it is good for

  • Order-of-magnitude decisions. Telling a 50-unit-a-month category from a 5,000-unit one before you commit stock.
  • Comparing competitors within one category. Relative ranks are far more reliable than absolute unit figures.
  • Sanity-checking a supplier's claim about what a product does on Amazon.

What it is not good for

  • Forecasting. Do not build a stock plan on it.
  • Seasonal categories. A rank in late November means something very different from the same rank in February.
  • Cross-category comparison. Rank 5,000 in Grocery and rank 5,000 in Electronics are not comparable quantities.

Where a BSR estimate earns its keep, and where it misleads

A rank-to-units estimate is a curve fitted to a category, and the curve moves. It moves with the season, with how many sellers are running deals that week, and with whatever Amazon has done to the category page recently. That is why this tool gives a range rather than one confident number: the range is the honest part, and any tool that hands you a single figure to two decimal places is hiding the same uncertainty behind better presentation.

Used comparatively it is genuinely useful — the gap between rank 800 and rank 8,000 in one category tells you something real about whether a niche is worth entering. Used absolutely, to forecast your own revenue or to price an acquisition, it is the wrong instrument. For your own products you already have the better data in Seller Central; for someone else's, treat the estimate as a shape rather than a figure, and never let it be the only reason for a decision that costs money.

This estimator supports the research end of keyword research and launch planning. The profit calculator tells you whether the units would be worth having, the product launch service is what we do with the answer, and the seller blog covers category entry in more depth.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

Why does the range look so wide?

Because it is. Rank moves hourly, the curve differs by category and season, and Amazon publishes none of it. A tool that gives you one confident number is hiding the same uncertainty rather than resolving it.

Should I use the main category rank or the sub-category rank?

The main category rank. Sub-category ranks are calculated against a much smaller pool and produce wildly optimistic numbers when fed into any rank-to-sales model.

How does this compare to paid estimators?

The same approach with a different dataset behind it. Paid tools have more observations, which narrows their curve, but they are still inferring rather than measuring. Where they differ from this one, treat the difference as a measure of the uncertainty, not a verdict.

Can you get me the real numbers?

For your own products, yes — Business Reports in Seller Central are actual data, and that is what we work from with clients. For a competitor's products, nobody has real numbers, including anyone who tells you they do.
