Amazon field limits · runs in your browser
What it checks

What it checks

Paste a listing in and the checker reads it against the six things that most often cost a page its ranking or its place on the shelf.

01

Character limits

200 for the title, 500 per bullet, 250 bytes for backend search terms. Category limits can be shorter; check yours in Seller Central.

  • Title, every bullet and the backend field counted
  • Backend terms counted in bytes, not characters
  • Your category may allow less than the general limit

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

02

Duplication between fields

Amazon indexes a term once. A word already in your title is wasted space in the backend field.

  • Terms that appear in more than one field
  • The backend field is for what is not already visible

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

03

Restricted phrasing

Promotional claims, guarantees and superlatives that can get a listing suppressed.

  • Superlatives and ranking claims
  • Guarantees and promotional wording
  • Flagged per bullet, so you can see which line it is

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

04

Words from another marketplace

Spellings and product words from another marketplace — the single most common problem in listings ported between marketplaces.

  • Spellings that belong to a different marketplace
  • Product words buyers in yours do not use
  • Two words for one thing are two keywords, not synonyms

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

05

Punctuation in backend terms

Commas and semicolons consume characters without creating a term.

  • Punctuation found in the backend field
  • The bytes it costs you
  • Spaces are all the separator the field needs

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

06

Unused bullets

Every one you leave empty is indexable space given away.

  • How many of the five are filled
  • What the empty ones are costing in characters

Example view — illustrative figures, not a live account.

Why the spelling check matters more than it sounds. “Trainers” and “sneakers” are not synonyms to Amazon's index — they are different keywords with different volumes. A listing written for one marketplace and shipped to another routinely indexes strongly for words its buyers never type.

The field limits, and what actually uses them

FieldLimitIndexedWhat it is for
Title200 charactersHeavilyPrimary term early, brand handled correctly, readable on a phone
Bullets500 each, five of themYesObjection, benefit, specification, use case, reassurance
Backend terms250 bytesYesTerms that do not fit naturally anywhere visible

Why a clean check is not the same as a good listing

Everything this tool looks at is mechanical: character counts, duplicated terms, phrases Amazon's policies do not allow, punctuation that breaks a backend field. A listing can pass every one of those checks and still not sell, because none of them ask whether the first bullet answers the question the buyer arrived with. Treat a clean result as the floor — the point at which nothing is actively working against you.

The duplication check is the least intuitive of them, and often the one that matters most. Repeating a keyword in the title, the bullets and the backend field does not make it count three times; it spends bytes in a field that is capped and leaves other terms unindexed. The backend field in particular is not a place to restate the title. Fill it with the spelling variants, the plurals and the words buyers use that no copywriter would put on the front of the page.

This tool covers the mechanical half of listing optimisation. The judgement half — what the page should actually say — is the work itself, and the Èidean engagement shows what it involved on a real catalogue. The keyword mapper handles the field each term belongs in, and prices are published.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

Why is the backend limit in bytes rather than characters?

Because Amazon counts storage, not letters. Standard English characters are one byte each, so 250 bytes is 250 characters — but accented characters and symbols can take two or more, and anything past the limit is silently ignored rather than rejected.

Should I repeat my brand name in the backend terms?

No. If it is in the title it is already indexed, and repeating it consumes bytes you could spend on a term you do not rank for. The same applies to any word already used in the title.

Are the restricted phrases a complete list?

No. It covers the promotional and guarantee language that most often causes suppression, but Amazon's style guidelines are longer and category-specific rules exist on top. Treat a clean result as encouraging rather than conclusive.

Will fixing these things improve my rank?

Fixing indexing problems and adding missing terms usually shows movement within two to four weeks, because Amazon re-indexes quickly. Fixing conversion problems takes longer to show, because rank follows sales history rather than leading it.
