Live listings with reviews and rank behind them, not a first launch.

Index audit — Every term you rank for, and every one you should

We check every keyword you currently rank for, every one you should and do not, and every listing that is suppressed or ineligible. You get the list, with positions and dates.

What Amazon search engine optimization actually is

Amazon is a shopping engine, not a library. Its job is to put the product most likely to sell at the top of the page, so its ranking system asks two questions about every listing: is this relevant to what was typed, and does it sell when people see it.

Relevance comes from words — the title, the bullets, the backend search terms, the attributes. Selling comes from everything else: price, images, reviews, stock, delivery promise. Amazon SEO is the discipline of getting both right at the same time, because either one alone is wasted.

How Amazon ranking differs from Google

The instinct most brands bring from their website is the wrong instinct here. There are no backlinks on Amazon. There is no domain authority. Nothing outside the listing votes for it.

Sellers call Amazon’s ranking system A9, and its current form A10, though Amazon publishes neither name nor the weightings behind them. Rufus, Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, answers in sentences and reads the same title, bullets and A+ Content a shopper does. Both reward the same thing: a listing that answers the question asked, then converts.

So what actually influences organic rank? The list beside this names the eight that move it, and marks which of them Amazon has put in writing itself — and which are our own read from client accounts.

What this means in practice: a well-optimised Amazon listing looks nothing like a well-optimised web page. It reads like a shelf label written by someone who knows what the buyer is worried about. Density does not help. Repetition does not help. Indexing the right term once, and then converting, is the whole game.

What influences Amazon organic rankings?

Eight factors move organic position — five of them in Amazon’s own words.

  • Search relevance and keyword indexing — whether Amazon reads your listing as an answer to the words typed, and whether you are indexed for the term at all. An unindexed keyword cannot rank at any position, however well the product sells. Amazon-named
  • Sales velocity and historical performance — recent units sold for that keyword, weighted above older sales, plus the track record behind the listing. Amazon-named
  • Conversion rate — the share of people who buy after viewing. The single strongest lever most sellers ignore. Our read
  • Click-through rate — how often your result gets picked out of the grid. Main image and title decide it, and it is measured before anyone reaches the page. Our read
  • Price competitiveness and availability — your total price against the alternatives on the same page, and stock — an out-of-stock offer cannot be the Featured Offer. Amazon-named
  • Reviews and ratings — Amazon frames these as purchase-decision signals rather than ranking inputs. They reach rank through conversion. Our read
  • Listing quality — images, video, A+ Content, attributes and browse node. A suppressed listing is not ranking badly — it is not ranking. Amazon-named
  • Advertising-assisted sales — Amazon says cost-per-click ads such as Sponsored Products can help offers rise through search results. Amazon-named

Process

How an SEO engagement starts

The five stages above are the work. This is how you get to them.

  1. Step 1. Free SEO audit

You send the ASINs. A person checks what you index for, what you do not, and what is suppressed, then writes it up.

  2. Step 2. Strategy call

Thirty minutes on what the audit found, which terms are worth chasing and which are not worth the spend.

  3. Step 3. Scope and proposal

Which listings, which terms and which tier, priced from the published rates. No long contract to sign.

  4. Step 4. Stage one starts

Index audit, then the keyword map, then the rebuild — in that order, with positions tracked from day one.

FAQ

Amazon SEO questions

What is Amazon SEO?

Amazon SEO is the work of getting a product to rank in Amazon's own search results. It has two halves: relevance, which is keywords placed in the title, bullets, backend search terms and structured attributes, and performance, which is conversion rate and recent sales velocity. There are no backlinks and no domain authority, so nothing outside the listing votes for it.

How long does Amazon SEO take to show results?

Indexing for new terms usually happens within 48 hours to two weeks. Meaningful position movement takes four to eight weeks, and a settled picture takes one full sales cycle, commonly 60 to 90 days, because rank follows accumulated conversion and sales history rather than the text change.

Can you guarantee page-one rankings?

No, and nobody honest will. Rank depends on your price, your reviews, your stock position and what competitors do, and nobody controls all four. What we commit to is the work itself, reported monthly against a baseline agreed before we start.

What is included in your Amazon SEO service?

An SEO audit, keyword research, competitor gap analysis, keyword-to-ASIN mapping, title, bullet, description and backend optimisation, attribute recommendations, indexing checks, rank tracking, PPC and SEO integration, listing CRO and A+ recommendations, a performance dashboard and a monthly strategy call.

Do you optimise existing listings, or only new ones?

Mostly existing ones. This is a growth engagement rather than a launch service, so the ideal account already has live ASINs with sales history, reviews and advertising data behind them. That history is what makes the keyword work accurate.

Do you provide Amazon keyword research on its own?

Yes, as a project rather than a retainer. It is the right starting point if you have an in-house team who will implement the changes themselves. The output is a mapped keyword portfolio, with each term assigned to one ASIN and one field.

How do Amazon PPC and SEO work together?

Advertising tells you which searches convert before you invest organically in them. The search term report shows the phrases that produced orders rather than just clicks, and those terms become the SEO priorities. Organic rank then carries the volume without a cost per click, which is what brings total advertising cost of sale down.

Do you optimise backend search terms and attributes?

Yes, and they are often where the largest gain sits, because most listings waste them. The backend field is roughly 250 bytes of space-separated terms, and words already used in the title or bullets do not need repeating there. Structured attributes are separate again, and they affect both filters and eligibility.

Do you provide A+ Content recommendations?

Yes. We brief and recommend rather than shoot photography, and we treat A+ as conversion work rather than ranking work, because its text does not index the way bullets do. The ranking gain is real but indirect: higher conversion rate is itself a ranking factor.

How do you track Amazon organic rankings?

Against a defined term set agreed at the start, checked weekly and reported as a weekly average rather than a daily position. Rank trackers sample one keyword from one location at one moment, so small daily movements are usually noise. We also check indexing separately, because a term you are not indexed for cannot rank at all.

Which Amazon marketplaces do you work in?

Any of them. The keyword work is built for the marketplace you sell in rather than translated from another, because search volume and vocabulary differ between them. A listing ported from one marketplace routinely indexes for terms that market's buyers never type, and the reverse is equally true.

What is the difference between the Amazon A9 and A10 algorithm?

A9 is the name the seller community gave Amazon's product search ranking system, after the subsidiary that built it; A10 is what people call the version in use since roughly 2020. Neither label is official and Amazon publishes neither. The observable shift is away from raw sales volume and paid performance, and towards relevance, conversion rate and seller authority — which in practice means advertising alone buys rank less effectively than it once did. Anyone quoting you exact A10 weightings is guessing.

What are the main Amazon ranking factors?

Keyword relevance across the indexed fields, conversion rate, recent sales velocity for that term, click-through rate from the results grid, listing completeness, and account and listing health. External traffic contributes but less than most sellers expect, and only when it converts. Conversion rate is the one most sellers under-work, because it is the multiplier on everything else.

Does Amazon SEO cover Rufus and AI search?

Partly, and we would rather be precise about which part. Rufus reads the same listing fields a shopper does — title, bullets, A+ Content, attributes, questions and reviews — so listings written to answer the real question are the listings an assistant can quote. What does not exist yet is a Rufus ranking report: no published placement, no position to track, no lever separate from the listing. We will not invoice you for optimising something neither of us can measure.

What is Amazon Brand Analytics, and do I need it?

Brand Analytics is the reporting Amazon gives Brand Registered sellers, and Search Query Performance inside it is the closest thing to ground truth on Amazon search: the terms that actually drove impressions, clicks and purchases on your ASINs. You do not need it for us to work, but it materially improves the keyword set. Without it we use your advertising search term report, which is the next best real data you own.

How many characters can Amazon backend search terms be?

The backend search term field is limited by bytes rather than characters — 250 bytes on most marketplaces, which is roughly 250 plain characters. Repeating words already in your title wastes it, as do competitor brand names, punctuation and plurals Amazon already handles. Most accounts we audit are using well under half of it, and using that half badly.

Can I do Amazon SEO myself?

Yes, and for a single product with a clear keyword set it is a reasonable weekend's work. It stops being reasonable at catalogue scale, across marketplaces, or when rank is not moving and you need to know whether the cause is indexing, conversion or something outside the listing. That diagnosis is most of what you are paying an agency for.

How much do Amazon SEO services cost?

Amazon SEO on its own is $799, $1,299 or $1,999 a month, covering up to 3, 5 or 10 parent ASINs, and it is part of every full-service retainer from $999 a month. Both are published in full rather than quoted on a call. The audit that comes first is free and yours to keep, whether or not you hire us.
