Amazon takes its referral fee on the VAT-inclusive price, but the VAT is not yours to keep, so the first step is stripping it out. Everything after that runs against net revenue.
- Net revenue = selling price ÷ (1 + VAT rate)
- Total cost = cost of goods + inbound shipping and duty + referral fee + FBA fee
- Contribution = net revenue − total cost
- Break-even ACoS = contribution ÷ net revenue, expressed as a percentage
Why break-even ACoS is the number that matters. It is the point at which an advertised sale contributes exactly nothing. Every ACoS target should sit below it, and by how much is a business decision, not a marketing one. A brand funding growth might deliberately run close to break-even; a brand taking profit out will not.
Where people go wrong
- Forgetting VAT. Calculating margin on the gross price overstates it by a sixth on a standard-rated product.
- Ignoring returns and storage. Neither is in this calculator. In a category with a 10% return rate, subtract that from contribution before you trust the number.
- Using a category benchmark ACoS. A 25% ACoS is excellent on a 45% margin and ruinous on a 20% one. The benchmark is your own maths.
- Confusing ACoS with TACoS. ACoS measures advertising against advertised sales; TACoS measures it against total sales. Growing organic rank shows up in TACoS, not ACoS.
What the number does not include
Two costs sit outside this calculator and both of them are real. Returns come off contribution after the fact, and in apparel or anything sized they are not a rounding error. Storage is the other one: a slow-moving unit pays rent every month it sits in a fulfilment centre, and long-term storage fees land on stock that has been there past the threshold. Neither is in the maths above, so treat the break-even ACoS it gives you as a ceiling rather than a target.
The habit worth building is running this per ASIN rather than per brand. Averaged across a catalogue the number flatters the weak products and punishes the strong ones, and you end up bidding the same on both. It is common to find one hero product quietly funding several others that never clear break-even — the fix was not better advertising, it was knowing which was which before the budget was set.
This calculator covers one part of PPC management: the margin maths that every bid sits on top of. The PPC audit tool takes it from there and reads your search term report, and the ACoS explainer walks through the same arithmetic slowly. Everything we do is on the services page, with prices published in full.

Questions about this tool
What referral fee should I use?
Amazon referral fees are mostly 8–15% depending on category, with some at 20% or higher. Check your exact rate in Seller Central under the fee schedule rather than guessing — a five-point error changes the break-even ACoS materially.
Should I include storage and return costs?
This calculator does not, to keep the inputs few enough to be useful. If your category has meaningful returns or you hold slow stock, subtract an allowance from the contribution figure before you set a target. In practice we model returns as a percentage reduction of net revenue.
Is break-even ACoS the same as my target ACoS?
No, and treating them as the same is how accounts lose money slowly. Break-even is where profit is zero. Your target should sit below it by whatever margin you intend to keep — the second figure this tool shows.
Why is my ACoS fine but the business is not making money?
Usually because ACoS only measures advertised sales. If most sales are advertised and the target sits near break-even, the account can look healthy while contributing almost nothing. TACoS — advertising against total sales — is the honest measure at account level.
