Amazon account suspended: what to do in the first 24 hours
Read the notice and identify the exact policy cited before doing anything else. Do not submit an immediate appeal, do not open multiple cases, and never create a second selling account. Gather the evidence Amazon asks for, fix the underlying cause, then submit one evidenced Plan of Action.
What kind of suspension do you actually have?
Three levels exist and they are not equally serious. The notice tells you which one you have.
| Level | What it means | Funds |
|---|---|---|
| Listing suppressed or removed | One ASIN is off sale. The account is otherwise fine | Unaffected |
| Selling privileges suspended | The whole account is down | Held pending review |
| Account deactivated (Section 3) | The most serious, usually a policy violation rather than a performance issue | Held, often for 90 days |
Identify which one you have before reading any further advice, including this article. The response differs materially, and appealing the wrong thing wastes the one clean submission you get.
What should you do in the first 24 hours?
- Read the notice properly. Find the specific policy clause cited, not the category. "Product authenticity" and "product condition" produce completely different appeals.
- Check Account Health. The dashboard in Seller Central often shows detail the email does not.
- Preserve evidence. Supplier invoices, purchase orders, authorisation letters, test certificates — whatever the notice references.
- Stop the cause. If it is an inventory or listing issue, fix it before you claim in writing that you have.
- Work out the exposure. Held funds, inbound stock, storage fees. It changes how aggressively you pursue the fastest route.
- Do not fire off an immediate appeal. A rushed first submission is the most common reason a recoverable suspension becomes a long one.
- Do not open several cases about the same issue. It splits the review and slows everything.
- Do not argue or blame Amazon in writing. Appeals are assessed on root cause and corrective action, not on fairness.
- Never open a second selling account. This turns a recoverable suspension into a permanent one.
How is a Plan of Action actually structured?
Amazon asks for three things, in this order, with evidence attached.
- Root cause. What actually happened, stated plainly. Not "a misunderstanding". If a supplier was at fault, say so and explain why your process did not catch it.
- Immediate corrective action. What you have already done, with dates. Listings removed on 3 August. Stock quarantined on 4 August. Supplier changed on 7 August.
- Preventive measures. The process change that stops recurrence, specific enough that a reviewer can picture it operating. "We will be more careful" is not a preventive measure.
Keep it short, factual and unemotional. Most rejected appeals are rejected for vagueness, defensiveness, or answering a different question from the one asked. We publish a reinstatement service you can work from.
What causes most UK suspensions?
Six causes account for the large majority of what we see. Five are preventable with process.
- Product authenticity complaints — usually a supply chain you cannot document to Amazon's standard.
- Product condition complaints — items arriving damaged, or used items sold as new.
- Review manipulation — including inserts that gate or incentivise, often printed years earlier. See the review rules.
- Safety and compliance — missing UKCA or CE documentation, or restricted product claims.
- Intellectual property complaints — a rights owner filing against your listing.
- Linked account — Amazon associating you with another suspended account, sometimes wrongly.
How long does reinstatement take?
It varies by type, and anyone quoting a fixed number before reading your notice is guessing.
| Type | Typical pattern |
|---|---|
| Listing-level issue | Often resolved fastest, sometimes within days |
| Account-level suspension | Longer, and frequently needs more than one submission |
| Document verification required | Runs to Amazon's own verification queue, which no agency can accelerate |
There is a shorter piece on this at our reinstatement page.
What evidence does Amazon actually want?
Amazon wants documents that prove the chain from supplier to listing, and it wants them in the format its verification teams read — not a narrative explaining why the documents are unavailable. What counts as sufficient depends on what was cited against you.
| What was cited | What to attach | What gets rejected |
|---|---|---|
| Inauthentic or not as described | Supplier invoices covering the ASIN and the period in question, with the supplier's contact details visible | Receipts, order confirmations, screenshots, invoices without the supplier's details |
| Intellectual property complaint | A retraction from the rights owner, or a licence or authorisation letter | An explanation of why you believe the complaint is unfair |
| Safety or compliance | Test reports, declarations of conformity, labelling that matches UK requirements | Supplier assurances with nothing behind them |
| Performance metrics | The operational change with dates, plus the metric before and after | A promise to do better |
| Linked account | The relationship explained plainly, with company documents that show it | Denial where the link is real — Amazon can already see it |
Two practical rules. Invoices should be dated before the complaint, cover at least the quantity sold in the period, and be legible without editing — redacting prices is generally accepted, redacting the supplier is not. And where the citation involves product safety or labelling, the underlying obligation is a UK legal one, not just an Amazon one; the GOV.UK product safety guidance sets out what your category actually requires, and fixing that properly is what makes the appeal true.
Assemble the whole evidence pack before writing a word of the Plan of Action. A submission that promises documents is a submission that will be rejected, and each rejection makes the next one harder.
When do you need help, and when do you not?
Plenty of suspensions are recoverable without paying anyone. If the cause is obvious, you have the documents, and the notice is a straightforward performance issue, write the Plan of Action yourself using the structure above.
Get help when: the account is deactivated under Section 3, a first appeal has already been rejected, the cause involves several linked issues, or the held funds are large enough that a slow resolution is a cash-flow problem in itself.
Whoever you use, be wary of guaranteed reinstatement. The decision belongs to Amazon alone, and a guarantee is either dishonest or priced to absorb the failures. Our reinstatement service quotes after reading the notice, and says plainly when we think an appeal is not winnable.
You are reinstated — what happens next?
Reinstatement restores selling privileges; it does not restore the account to where it was. Rank, stock position and cash flow all take longer to recover than the account does, and the fortnight after reinstatement is where sellers lose the most ground by assuming otherwise.
What to expect, in the order it usually bites:
- Rank has decayed. Organic position follows recent sales velocity, and you have had none. Expect to re-earn position rather than to find it waiting — the mechanism is in how Amazon's ranking algorithm works.
- Funds are released on Amazon's schedule. Held disbursements do not necessarily all arrive at once, so plan cash flow on the assumption they are slow.
- Your account health record persists. The violation stays visible on the dashboard, and a second issue in the same area is treated far more seriously than a first.
- Advertising needs restarting deliberately. Campaigns paused during a suspension come back with stale bids against a changed auction.
The recovery sequence that works is unglamorous: confirm stock and pricing are correct before anything is switched on, restart advertising on your proven converting terms rather than across the whole account, and leave the listings alone for a fortnight so that the sales signal has something stable to accumulate against. Where the suspension was listing-level, why Amazon suppresses a listing covers the checks worth running before you relist.
Then write down the preventive measures you promised in the Plan of Action and actually implement them. Amazon's tolerance for a repeat of the same violation is considerably lower than for the first, and the preventive section of your own appeal is the document you will be measured against. A written account audit is a reasonable way to check nothing else is sitting in the same condition.
Questions people also ask
What should I do first if my Amazon account is suspended?
Read the notice and identify the exact policy cited, then check the Account Health dashboard for detail the email omits. Gather the evidence Amazon asks for and fix the underlying cause before submitting anything. Do not appeal immediately — a rushed first submission is the most common reason a recoverable suspension drags on.
How long does an Amazon suspension appeal take?
It depends on the type. Listing-level issues are often resolved within days; account-level suspensions typically take longer and frequently need more than one submission; anything requiring document verification runs to Amazon's own queue, which nobody can speed up.
What is a Plan of Action?
It is the document Amazon requires to reinstate you. It has three parts: the root cause of the issue, the immediate corrective action you have already taken with dates, and the preventive measures that stop it recurring. It must be specific, evidenced and free of excuses.
Can I open a new Amazon account if mine is suspended?
No. Creating a second selling account while suspended turns a recoverable situation into a permanent ban, and Amazon links accounts through payment details, addresses, devices and IP. It is the single most damaging thing you can do at this point.
Can an agency guarantee my account will be reinstated?
No, and any that does is either lying or planning to blame you when it fails. The decision belongs to Amazon. What an agency can do is make sure the Plan of Action addresses the actual violation with the evidence Amazon asks for.
What invoices does Amazon accept for an inauthentic complaint?
Supplier invoices dated before the complaint, covering the ASIN and at least the quantity sold in the period, with the supplier's name and contact details legible. Receipts, order confirmations and screenshots are routinely rejected. Redacting prices is generally accepted; redacting the supplier is not, because verifying the supplier is the point of the exercise.
Does my ranking come back after reinstatement?
Not automatically. Organic rank follows recent sales velocity, and a suspension means you had none, so position has to be re-earned over weeks rather than recovered on the day you are reinstated. Restart advertising on your proven converting terms first and leave listings unchanged for a fortnight so the sales signal has something stable to build on.
