What is Amazon Vine and is it worth it?
Amazon Vine is Amazon's own early-review programme. Brand-registered sellers enrol units, Amazon gives them to selected reviewers, and those reviewers post honest reviews marked Vine Voice. It is worth it for new products with almost no reviews, and a bad idea for products with a known fault.
What is Amazon Vine and how does it work?
Vine is a programme Amazon runs, not a service you buy from a third party. That distinction is the whole reason it is compliant.
- You enrol a parent ASIN and commit a number of units, which Amazon holds.
- Amazon offers the product to reviewers it has selected — Vine Voices — based on their reviewing history.
- They receive the product free and post a review if they choose to.
- The review appears with a Vine Voice badge, marking it as part of the programme.
You cannot choose the reviewers, see who they are in advance, influence the rating, or remove a review you dislike. That is precisely why Vine reviews carry weight with buyers.
What does Amazon Vine cost in the UK?
Two costs, and sellers routinely forget the second.
| Cost | What it is |
|---|---|
| Enrolment fee | Paid to Amazon per parent ASIN. Amazon has changed the UK fee more than once, so take the current figure from the Vine page in your own Seller Central account rather than from any article. |
| Cost of goods | The units themselves are given away. At 30 units and £8 cost of goods, that is £240 of stock before the enrolment fee. |
Budget on the total, not the fee. For a low-cost product it is trivial; for a £60 item it is a real number that belongs in the launch plan rather than as a surprise.
When is Vine genuinely worth it?
Three situations, and they are narrower than most guidance suggests.
- A new product with fewer than about fifteen reviews. This is the case Vine exists for. Below that threshold, review count itself suppresses conversion regardless of how good the listing is.
- A relaunch after a genuine product improvement. Vine reviewers will describe the improved version, which changes the recent-review picture buyers actually read.
- Entering a category where competitors have hundreds of reviews. You will not catch them, but crossing the credibility threshold is what matters.
When is Vine a bad idea?
Also three, and they cost more than the fee.
- The product has a known fault. Vine reviewers are experienced and detailed. Enrolling a flawed product buys a permanent, prominent, well-written description of the flaw.
- You already have a healthy review count. Above roughly a hundred reviews, thirty more move the average very little. The rating calculator shows exactly how little.
- You are hoping for five stars. Vine reviews trend more critical than organic ones, because reviewers are rating carefully rather than emotionally.
Who can enrol, and what has to be true first?
Vine is open to sellers enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry, for products that are FBA, in stock, and below the review threshold Amazon sets for the programme. Every one of those is a hard gate rather than a preference.
| Requirement | Why it exists | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Brand Registry | Vine is a brand programme | Needs a registered or pending trade mark — allow months, not days, if you have not started |
| FBA and in stock | Amazon ships the units to reviewers | A merchant-fulfilled ASIN cannot be enrolled; units must be physically available |
| Below the review threshold | The programme is for products without a review history | A well-reviewed ASIN is ineligible, which settles the “should I top up?” question for you |
| A complete listing | Reviewers judge what they receive against what was promised | Enrol after the images, bullets and A+ Content are finished, not before |
The sequencing matters more than the paperwork. Vine reviews are permanent and they arrive quickly, so they lock in whatever state your listing and product are in on the day you enrol. Finish the listing work first, confirm the packaging survives a courier, and only then commit units. There is a fuller version of that order of operations in how to get more reviews without breaking the rules.
One planning note for launches: because Brand Registry can take months and Vine reviews take weeks to appear after enrolment, Vine is a decision to make during launch planning, not a lever to pull when sales disappoint in week three.
What ratings do Vine reviewers actually give?
Expect them to be tougher than your organic reviews and more detailed. A Vine reviewer will note that the lid is stiff, that the manual is thin, and that the colour differs slightly from the image.
That is uncomfortable and it is also useful: those reviews are the highest-quality product feedback you will get for the price, and they arrive before the wider market sees the same problems. Several of our clients have used a Vine round as a product QA exercise as much as a review exercise.
Read them as a list of fixes rather than as a verdict. Where three Vine reviewers mention the same thing, that is a design or packaging note worth acting on before the wider market finds it; where one mentions something nobody else does, it is usually noise. If the average that comes back is below your target, the answer is the product, not more reviews — our rating calculator will show you how much volume it would take to outrun a low Vine average, which is normally enough to settle the argument. The review management service covers how we run an enrolment alongside the rest of the review work.
Questions people also ask
How much does Amazon Vine cost in the UK?
Amazon charges an enrolment fee per parent ASIN, and Amazon has changed this figure more than once — check the current amount on the Vine page in Seller Central. On top of the fee you give away the enrolled units, so budget the cost of goods as well.
Is Amazon Vine against the rules?
No. Vine is Amazon's own programme, which is what makes it compliant. You cannot select reviewers, influence ratings or remove reviews, so none of the conditions that make third-party review services prohibited apply.
How many reviews does Amazon Vine generate?
Fewer than the units enrolled, because not every reviewer posts. Treat the enrolled quantity as the maximum rather than the expected result, and size the enrolment against the review count you are trying to reach.
Do Vine reviews count as verified purchases?
No. Vine reviews carry a Vine Voice badge instead of the Verified Purchase badge, because the reviewer did not buy the product. Buyers can see the distinction, which is part of why the programme carries credibility.
Who is eligible for Amazon Vine in the UK?
Sellers enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry, for FBA products that are in stock and still below the review threshold Amazon sets for the programme. Brand Registry itself needs a registered or pending trade mark, so if you have not started that, allow months rather than days before Vine is available to you.
Should I enrol in Vine before or after optimising the listing?
After. Vine reviews are permanent and arrive quickly, so they capture whatever state your listing, packaging and product are in on the day you enrol. Finish the images, bullets and A+ Content, confirm the packaging survives a courier, then commit units.
